This paper charts the progression of the ALSTOM Advanced Induction Motor System from its industrial beginnings, through the US Integrated Propulsion System development to the design for the Ministry of Defence Electric Ship Technology Demonstrator contract. The requirements for such a motor system within the UK MoD are explained along with the salient points of the system design. The paper concludes by indicating the possible future of this low risk propulsion motor system.
