In 1990, rapid development in power electronics presented the opportunity of developing a bi-directional static link converter to replace the motor generator sets traditionally fitted in HM Submarines. This concept was proven in shore test facilities during the early 1990s. Since 1998 it has undergone extensive development, which has engineered an advanced, efficient, quiet and compact Main Static Converter (MSC) that utilises Integrated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBT) for the Royal Navy ASTUTE Class nuclear submarine programme. This paper outlines the electrical system architecture and justification for a static solution before discussing the technical characteristics of the MSC and issues contributing to effective integration of the equipment into the wider electrical power system.
