The influence of modern agriculture on soil physical properties has been studied and observed at several levels. Soil compaction from agricultural practices offers benefits to crop production including enhanced seed-to-soil contact, faster germination, and prevents moisture loss. On the other hand, reductions in infiltration rates, water storage capacity, water movement, and root growth and development are often the focal point of the negative effects of compaction. The recent adaptation of production to site specific agricultural techniques such as grid soil sampling, variable rate fertilization, yield monitoring, increased drainage management, and subsequent analysis of such information, has led to an increased need for information regarding soilcompaction.
