In this paper, we will discuss the organizational and logistic challenges involved in creating a more robust production of vegetables in rural areas dominated by small-scale farmers. We will focus particular attention on the use of the Internet and electronic commerce, and on the differentiation of product value and logistic service level as strategic parameters. We suggest that a direct producer - consumer relation is preferable to using the wholesaler chain. The paper is based on a recent study of the logistic challenges of direct distribution of vegetables to end-consumers when the orders are placed through the Internet.
