EXWeb: remotely operating devices in the home network

In this paper, we have proposed the EXWeb platform to operate devices remotely by using a web browser installed in a cellular phone. Using the EXWeb platform the user is able to operate various remote Jini devices with non-Java cellular phones. Also, the EXWeb platform user can redirect output data from the remote device to local devices. The user interface is integrated into the Web browser and offers a uniform access environment to the home network. It provides an easy to use system that remotely operates devices and redirects output via a cellular phone. Even in the case when a needed function does not exist in a cellular phone the environment handles the necessary substitution. The EXWeb platform integrates a mobile computing environment with a Jini environment. We have described our implemented prototype that remotely operates a VCR located in a home networked environment. Future studies will focus on security. This is viewed as a necessity and will be implemented. With the recent release of i-mode compatible cellular phones, it is now possible to write Java based applications on a cellular phone. We plan to implement Java based security applications for our prototype. In addition, we plan to evaluate the EXWeb platform by testing it on both novice and advanced cellular phone users. By evaluating the EXWeb platform, we hope to find out what users will typically use the EXWeb platform for and tailor our platform to those needs.
