Relationship between the degree of obesity based on Body Mass Index and hypertension among the Japanese men and women

The aim of our study was to determine the prevalence of obesity and underweight based on Body Mass Index (BMI), and the relationship between the BMI and the hypertension among Japanese population. The subjects were 19,086 Japanese who underwent an annual physical examination in 31 towns of Mie prefecture, Japan. The prevalence of hypertension was shown by the classification of sex, age group, and BMI. Multiple logistic regression analysis was carried out to determine the relationship between the degree of obesity and hypertension adjusted for sex and age. The prevalence of obesity (BMI = 25kg/m~2) was 22.1% and of underweight (BMI<18.5kg/m~2) was 6.5%, respectively. The prevalence of hypertension had a strongly positive correlation with BMI among all sex- and age-specific and rapidly increased with the age. It was significantly increasing with BMI over and above the group of 24-25.9kg/m~2 (median = 25kg/m~2). BMI 26-27.9kg/m~2 had an odds ratio of approximate 2.0 for hypertension in logistic model adjusted for sex and age. To facilitate planning of hypertension prevention, it was purpose that the necessity of managing by from BMI=25kg/m~2 to control a proper weight in Japanese community.
