For evaluating subsurface contamination, the sampling method (boring) is commonly used. However, this method cannot monitor the change of in-situ contaminations and concentrations with respect to time. The purpose of this study is to develop a measuring method, called Frequency Domain Reflectometry with Vector network analyzer (FDR-V), for the measurement of subsurface salinity and oil contaminations. The FDR-V method uses a coaxial probe, which allows the measurement of complex dielectric constants from 1GHz to 18GHz. The experimental study indicates the possibility of measuring both the subsurface contaminant concentration and the volumetric moisture content.
