The results presented here show that sound knowledge of the material flow stress properties for varying strain, strain-rate and temperature in machining is important to truly predict technological performance factors in machining. However the determination of these properties require considerable effort and proper experimental setup. The challenge is to obtain these flow stress properties for the high strains, strain-rates and temperatures encountered in high speed machining. The use of the Oxley machining theory in reverse seems to he adequate but is limited to a small range in terms of the data obtained. A further criticism to this methodology is the circular nature of the technique in which machining is used to obtain the data and using the same data to predict the technological performance factors. An improved experimental technique will greatly enhance the derivation of the flow stress properties for machining.
