The recently launched EU project NOFRETETE (Nitrogen Oxides Emissions from European Forest Ecosystems), which brings together nine European research groups, aims at improving the highly uncertain information about nitrogen oxides (NO and N_2O) emissions from forest soils, with special respect to the impact of anthropogenic influences, like e.g. atmospheric N-deposition. It will consist of (ⅰ) a combination of field and laboratory experiments, (ⅱ) further development and application of an existing biogeochemical process-oriented model for the prediction of N-trace gas emissions from forest soils (PnET-N-DNDC), (ⅲ) coupling of the biogeochemical process model to a multi-layer canopy model to get reliable estimates of the N-trace gas exchange at the ecosystem level, (ⅳ) linkage of the combined models to a GIS database, containing information about land-use, climate, soil properties and atmospheric N-deposition for the calculation of N-oxide emission inventories and scenarios for European forests.
