摘要

The paper considers major possibilities for increasing tanker protection against ecologically hazardous liquid cargo (oil) spills associated with ship collisions. Quantitative functions determining the efficiency of passively enhancing tanker protection through increasing steel inputs into cargo tank structures are analysed. Economic aspects of this method, which along with the positive effects decreases the payload, are estimated. Based on probabilistic and economic analyses of both positive and negative consequences of strengthening cargo tank structural protection, critical probabilities of spillage accidents due to tanker ramming by other ships are estimated; exceeding those critical values makes dedicated material investment into tanker structural protections an economically justified measure.
