Estimation of Particulate Emission Indices as a Function of Size for the LTO Cycle for Commercial Jet Engines

In an environmental impact assessment of airport activities it is important to include an assessment of aircraft primary pollutants, and specifically particulate emissions (soot). This paper estimates the particle emission indices as a function of size and fuel sulfur content for the LTO cycle for several commercial jet engines and calculates associate mass-based emission indices. The engines used in this study are the Rolls Royce RB211, Pratt and Whitney JT8D and JT9D and the General Electric CFM56-5C2. Particle emission concentrations and their size distributions were measured for the jet engines using UMR Mobile Aerosol Sampling system methodologies and were correlated with LTO cycle smoke numbers reported in the ICAO database.
