Closed-contact melting of a solid phase change material in a horizontal circular cylinder was analyzed under a constant heat transfer rate on the surface. It was assumed that total heat is transferred across the closed contact surface and the heat transfer from the opposite surface of the solid was neglected. Results show that under the constant heat transfer coefficient, melting rate is increased as time passes. Comparison of the analysis with an experiment showed good agreement for high Reynolds number. For low Reynolds number, however, heat transfer by natural convection from the opposite surface of the solid could not be neglected.
