Natural convection around upward-facing, horizontal plate of which both ends are closed with vertical adiabatic walls was investigated experimentally. The flow field and the surface temperatures of the horizontal plates were visualized with particles and liquid-crystal thermometry. Local heat transfer coefficients of the horizontal plates were also measured. The visual result showed that the ambient fluid flows onto the center of the horizontal plate, and then, generates a pair of large-scale vortices over the plate when H/W is larger than 0.2. It is also found that the heat transfer from the horizontal plate is enhanced markedly when H/W=0.5, and the maximum rate of the enhancement reaches 1.15.
