The demand to functionalize the surface of various polymer films, paper, glass, metal, woven and non-woven materials continues to grow along with the number of potential applications. Sigma has worked for several years in the development of materials, coating processes, and equipment to functionalize web surfaces in a vacuum environment. The various coatings have a wide range of properties that include protective, leveling, color, hydrophilic-phobic, oleophilic-phobic, UV absorbing, IR transmitting, antifog, antibacterial, antistatic, low and high dielectric constant, high dielectric strength, ionically conductive, metal chelating, photoconductive, photoemitting, chemical sensing, and color changing. The applications range from simple decorative and protective coatings to highly functional polymers for energy storage, security and light emitting devices. This paper will present an update on the material and process technology as they apply to several of these applications.
