The Mirna river viaduct (Croatia) will cross a valley with a subsoil consisting of a very soft clay deposit, 160 m thick. The necessity to found the viaduct on long floating piles has led to study in full scale the behaviour of various piles. The interpretation of the results obtained for one driven pile, fully instrumented, has revealed that the creeping could be of a significant importance when predicting the settlement. The measured 'gross' creeping was due mainly to 2 causes: the creeping of thesoil and the creeping of the shaft concrete, the drifting of the instrumentation being insignificant. The authors are reporting about factors with far reaching implications when engineers have to design piles supporting structures for which very small settlements are required (high speed train viaduct, bridge-channel, assembling hall for precision construction).
