External gear pumps are a common source of significant vibration and noise in hydraulic power applications. While them have been numerous investigations of the mechanism of noise generation in the pump and its effect on fluid-borne noise, few studies have considered the pump in the context of a typical application where it may be mounted to a compliant supporting structure, such as a vehicle frame. Several paths for noise radiation are present, including: (i) direct air-borne radiation from the pump casing, (ii) radiation from other hydraulic components connected to the pump through coupled fluid/structural transmission paths, and (iii) radiation from the support frame to which the pump is mounted. In this paper, relevant literature on the subject is reviewed. Results of preliminary experimental parametric design studies for a lift truck application focusing on hydraulic loading and coupling conditions and pump mounting conditions are presented. Some recommendations for future research are offered.
