The purpose of this article is to present the industrial application of one of the prescriptive models of design, and indicate its shortcomings. The model was used for designing a cutter, or, more precisely, the upgrading of an existing cutter for piece plastic items into a cutter for plastic beverage packaging. This model has already been successfully applied to the upgrading of a tubular turbine radial bearing [1], which is also one of the reasons it was used again here. Another reason is, naturally, the fact that the applicability of design models can only be verified by using them for solving real problems, which in turn result in improving the model. Why is such a cutter necessary? The development of a cutter for plastic beverage packaging, which is described in this paper, is part of a wider project conducted by this team, which involves the development of a compact unit that will allow the disposal of wastes sorted by material directly by users/customers. The sorted wastes will be immediately processed by small on-site units in order to reduce their volume. The large volume, and low density, of modem waste is a specific problem. Reduction of the volume of waste would result in reduced space requirements as well as savings in transportation and further processing.
