Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) is a highly specific and sensitive detection protocol used in a diversity of analytical applications. These include immunoassays, DNA probe assays, and assays for numerous analytes such as oxalate, NADH, amines, amino acids. ECL methods have several significant advantages over the conventional chemiluminescent techniques. Particularly, the necessary coreactants are produced in situ at a given electrode, enabling the reaction to be controlled through small changes in the applied potential. Another advantage is that light emission is located only in the immediate vicinity of the electrode surface, allowing efficient and facile light collection. Finally, ECL techniques need only a small volume of sample. These advantages are attractive for constructing optrode. As a result, several ECL optrodes have been developed. All these ECL optrodes used opaque electrodes as working electrodes.
