We are currently witnessing an increase in technology applied in the various types of treatment provided by Palliative Care Units (PCU). The question now arises to what extent dying patients should by subjected to a process of 'medicalisation' and how this process should be considered within the context of the principles of palliative care. The issue centres around what value to attach to the concept of 'low tech and high touch', if - as appears likely from many indicators - as palliative care develops we see a return to the idea that dying patients should not be denied advanced technology treatment.
