Macroscopic non-uniform shrinkage in the sintering of ceramics powder compacts is simulated by a viscoplastic finite element method. The shrinkage curve required as a material constant for the simulation is obtained from numerical simulation using a microscopic approach based on the Monte Carlo method. In the microscopic approach, powder particles and pores are divided into many cells, and the growth of grains in the particles and the disappearance of pores among the particles are simulated by means of the Potts model. The shrinkage curve is calculated from the change in dimensino of the particles. The macroscopic shrinkage behaviour in the sintering of circular two-layer compacts is simulated by the viscoplastic finite element method using the shrinkage curve obtained by the microscopic approach.
