摘要

MacDowell Lake is the site of a small First Nation community in northwestern Ontario, north of the 52nd parallel. The operation of a diesel-powered telephone station next to the village resulted in diesel contamination in both soil and groundwater, including a 700 m~2 liquid-phase petroleum hydrocarbon plume. Contaminated surface soils are being treated by landfarming. Groundwater remediation is currently in the free-product recovery stage, and will eventually proceed to a monitored natural attenuation (MoNA) approach. Remediation activities at the site are constrained by several factors including: lack of road accessibility, aircraft payload limits, absence of utilities, local fauna, climate, and soil conditions. Because of these constraints and because of the otherwise pristine nature of the site, remediation strategies must be technologically simple and more environmentally benign than conventional approaches.
