New fluorinated coatings were obtained by using a perfluoropoly ether product (PFEUMA) having the following structure: CF_3CF_2O(CF_2CF_2O)_m(CF_2O)_nCF_2CH_2OCONHCH_2CH_2OCOC(CH_3)=CH_2 where m/n=2 and M_n =1079 The fluorinated coatings prepared were of two types: 1. cured films, obtained by photopolymerisation of PFEUMA added to a typical UV-curable resin (Bisphenol A bis-ethylether diacrylate) 2. thermoplastic films, obtained from solution, based on methylmethacrylate (MMA) -PFEUMA copolymers. All coatings, even when the concentration of the fluorinated comonomer was very low (< 1% w/w), exhibited hydrophobic and lipophobic properties. Angle-dependent XPS analyses showed that the fluorinated monomer preferentially concentrates at the air surface of the films and a fluorine gradient normal to the surface is present. Surface properties could change by changing the substrate. In the thermoplastic films a surface reorganisation was observed by changing the interface. The wettability increased when the films were dipped in water; after complete drying, the surface regained its hydrophobicity.
