A numerical model to analyze the insulation property of 500kV 1-break SF_6 circuit breaks is presented based on 3-D electric field computations of arc-quenching chambers by applying the finite element method (FEM). In the mathematical modeling of 3-D electric fields, the shielding cover, the parallel capacitor sets, resistor contacts, and various relevant components are taken into consideration; the 3-D grid has been generated for this complicated calculation region and 3-D electric field numerical simulations are achieved. The potential and the electric field strength distributions of different 3-D sections are analyzed and figured out.
