Artillery Gun Launch Modeling of the SADARM Electronic Module Assembly

The SADARM projectile is launched from a 155mm artillery cannon and is subjected to setback loads in excess of 15,000 g's and spin rates in excess of 270 RPS. The projectile contains two submunitions in a cargo stack. Each submunition contains the electronic module assembly (EMA), which consists of an aluminum housing containing three circuit boards and a variety of discrete electronic components. Novel post-processing techniques were developed utilizing a parallel version of LLNL Dyna3D and LLNL Griz. These techniques permit easy visualization of the entire simulation as well as enabling the extraction and plotting of local board flexure data from the rotating EMA model. This paper describes the launch simulation as well as the techniques developed to extract the design analysis data.
