Material selection plays an important role in the design of animal-care facilities, not only for the concern of durability but also for the concern of sustainability. During the life cycle of material, its extraction, processing, transportation, use,and disposal can have negative health and environmental consequences such as polluting water and air, destroying native habitats, and depleting natural resources. While environmentally responsible procurement policies can significantly reduce these impacts, the most effective strategy that a hospital can implement is to consider the environmental benefits when reviewing material choices.
