I practiced for 31 years just 20 miles from Old Lyme, CT, the place where Lyme disease (LD) was first characterized. Controlling tick-borne diseases could easily have been described as controlling canine Lyme disease. I eliminated LD from my practicewith fastidious immunization using LymeVax~R in all dogs. In other areas of the United States infections with organisms for which there is no vaccination are the rule. In Durham (and other Lyme-endemic areas) a new tick-borne infection was recognized (Anaplasma phagocytophilum) in large percentages of canine patients. To deal with these other infections I developed the IMTBD program based on the following steps: Know the tick species in your practice area and know the seasons of their activity.
