The success or failure of a surgical procedure ultimately begins with the preparation of the patient. Everything from the drugs chosen for premedication to positioning on the surgery table. After confirming the identity of the patient, assessing the patient's health status is the most important aspect for choosing which drugs should be given. The patient should be admitted to the clinic the night before for elective procedures to enable the assessment to be made and allow the staff to remove food. Take into consideration the patient's age, breed, systemic diseases, blood work, drug history, disposition, etc. All staff can assist by observing the patient each time it is seen and providing vital information that may have been missed previously. Alertthe doctor to any changes in behavior, if the patient is bleeding, vomiting, has diarrhea, etc. Typically, the doctor will let you know which drugs and doses should be given, but some clinics will allow an RVT to make a recommendation that will ultimately be approved or changed by the doctor.
