The desire for direct linear drives has received increased attention due to developments in high energy permanent magnets and advancements in power electronics and microcontrollers. In this paper, we present our experience in the implementation of a closed loop position control of a double armature linear dc motor with a Sm-Co permanent magnet as the excitation system. Two low friction linear bearings are used as the supporting mechanism and a new type of linear conductive plastic material is employed as the position sensor for the linear motor.
