The stepping motor has an armature (2) with a permanent magnet (6) with a number of magnetic poles and an associated control winding (7a). The magnetic poles cooperate with a toothed inductor (1). The ratio of the tooth width to the tooth spacing for the inductor (1) is less than 0.5 and the ratio of the inductor tooth width to the armature tooth width is greater than 1.3.
