Through its partnership with the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC), the Florida Energy Office/Department of Community Affairs (FEO/DCA), the Florida Municipal Power Association (FMPA), the Florida Municipal Electric Association (FMEA) and its member utilities, and various members of local communities, the SunSmart Community Partnerships Program has the potential to offer solar technologies to over one-million electric ratepayers in Florida. The goal of the SunSmart Community Partnerships Program is to bolster municipal utilities' efforts to develop sustainable green energy programs. The SunSmart Community Partnerships Program will run for a period of two years. Its activities include increasing community awareness of existing local green power programs, educating the public on the merits of solar energy in Florida, providing additional resources to program participants, streamlining marketing activities among participating municipal utilities, providing smaller municipal utilities with aggregate buying power and linking potential community and end-user groups to local green power activities. Member utilities are also educated on issues involving interconnection of grid-tied systems, net metering, liability insurance requirements and working with state solar contractors.
