Design and globalization - the role of the designer in relation to questions of cultural diversity

摘要

This paper discusses the role of the designer in relation to questions of cultural diversity. It analyses the symbolical, practical and technical function of objects, the paradox of cost in the diversification of product design, and the influences of imported products and conceptual design in the creation of wishes. Moreover, it points out tendencies to individualization, global standardization and hybridism in industrial design. Taking into account the capitalistic system and the globalisation process, it considers the designer as (1) an important mediator between the material constructions, the practical and the symbolical universe of individuals and societies, and (2) as co-responsible for the preservation of identities and cultural heritages of mankind.
