Statistical Tolerance Bounds: Overview and Applications to Spacecraft and Launch Vehicle Dynamic Environments

Determination of space systems surviving loads, acoustics, vibration, and shock environments are frequently made based on a limited sample of flight data. Examples include determining qualification and acceptance levels for acoustic environments, computing a lower bound on material strength, and computing the probability that the strength of a material exceeds the max load applied. A random sample of data can be used to estimate strength or probability of exceeding limits, however these estimates provide no information about the precision. There may be large differences between the estimated values and true values. Statistical intervals quantify the uncertainty associated with these estimates. This paper will provide guidelines on using tolerance bounds and provide methods for computing these bounds. (This was previously published in the 28th Aerospace Testing Seminar proceedings).
