Controversies in Avian Medicine

Many controversial issues exist in the realm of veterinary medicine, and veterinarians may find themselves facing dilemmas with regard to treatment options. We may not even be aware of the issues we face on a daily basis. This discussion is intended to promote critical thinking about some of our "routine" practices and medical assumptions. There are many drags and issues in avian medicine which are controversial-some of which practitioners may not even realize. This presentation is designed to demonstrate and promote critical thinking, to educate practitioners on a few selected issues, and to encourage them to form their own opinions. This presentation will cover the use of statins in birds, medications approved (and banned) for use in poultry, andthe use of leuprolide acetate (Lupron, TAP Pharmaceuticals Inc, Lake Forest, IL, USA) in certain scenarios in egg-laying hens.
