Bronchogenic Carcinoma in a Hyacinth Macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus)

This abstract was reprinted from an article submitted for publication to the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association. An adult, female hyacinth macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus) of unknown age was presented for sudden onset weakness ofthe lower limbs. Neurologic examination revealed bilateral paresis of the pelvic limb and decreased propioception. Deep pain perception was present in both affected limbs. Toxicology results were negative for zinc, lead, and copper. Blood work showed moderate leucopenia, moderate elevations in creatine kinase and uric acid and mild decrease in albumin. Whole body radiographs revealed an increase in soft tissue opacity of the left lung. Supportive treatment and broad spectrum antibiotics was initiated.Computed tomography (CT) scan revealed mutifocal areas of mineralization within the spinal cord at the level of the mid thorax and variably-sized soft tissue nodules throughout the lungs and invading the vertebral canal. After the CT scan, the bird wentinto cardiorespiratory arrest and resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful. On postmortem histopathologic evaluation, a diagnosis of bronchial carcinoma with compression and degeneration of the spinal cord was made.
