A New Perspective on Fledging and Wing Clipping

Failure to allow baby birds to fledge and severe wing clipping have contributed to the development and presentation of a number of severe behavioral problems, injuries, and mortalities. It has become clear that these out-of-date management practices need to be eliminated. The practice of severe wing clipping has been carried through from the past when pet birds were wild-caught adults who would escape if given the chance. An extension of this practice in domestically raised birds is the clipping of wing feathers in babies without allowing a fledging period. Many problems have resulted from these practices in these birds. This discussion reviews these problems and presents a new perspective on these management techniques. A recommended treatment plan for those birds affected is presented.
