Bleeding into the central nervous system

Hemorrhage within or around the central nervous system (CNS) can be a devastating, rapidly evolving disease process tor many animals. Bleeding can be associated with mechanical disruption of the vascular wall or abnormalities of normal hemostatic mechanisms. In most instances, clinical signs occur acutely. Evidence of external signs of hemorrhagic disease may be lacking. Imaging studies such as computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance(MR) imaging are helpful in delineating the cause and the extent of the bleeding. Treatment is two-fold; management of the volume effects of blood in or around the nervous tissue and correcting the underlying cause of the hemorrhage.
