The characterized artificial receptors comprise two parts (fig. 1): a guanidinio carbonyl pyrrole as binding motif (CBS: carboxylate binding site) for the C-terminus of the peptide substrate and a tripeptide part which is important for the substrate selectivity of the receptor.1 In solution, there is an acid/base equilibrium between the protonated CBS and its neutral form (fig. 1 left). Carboxylates as well as peptides (C-terminus) can be complexed by the protonated CBS (fig. 1 top).
