The detection of pathogenic bacteria bears important implications in both public health and security. Routine identification of pathogenic bacteria involves biochemical characterization of cultured microorganisms taken from the contaminated sources. Typical analysis in a clinical setting requires a biomass of 10~6 — 10~8 cells from the cultured medium for biochemical assay or physiological characterization of the microorganisms. Pathogen screening by means of surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) provides a faster and more sensitive alternative route towards the identification and detection of pathogenic bacteria.
