Raman Scattering from Industrially Prepared Nanometer Sized Particles of Monoclinic and Cubic Phases of Yttrium Europium Oxide Phosphors

Yttrium europium oxide, Y_2O_3:Eu, emits red light when excited by the 253.7 nm ultraviolet line of a mercury discharge, and it has found widespread useage as a photoluminescent phosphor in cold cathode fluorescent lamps and the new energy efficient compact fluorescent bulbs currently replacing tungsten filament lamps in many parts of the world. There are a number of other potential uses for nanometer sized particles of cubic Y203:Eu, and so with our industrial partner Intrinsiq Materials Ltd. we have been scaling up production of these nanometer sized particles. Here we present the Raman spectra of the nanometer sized particles of Y203:Eu under 632.8 nm helium neon laser light excitation when they are heated to 400, 700 and 900°C.
