2.PAK: A SNOBOL-BASED PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE FOR ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE APPLICATIONS

Programming language, SNOBOL, back tracking, relational data base, artificial intelligence. Abstract This paper describes a programming language for Artificial Intelligence applications which offers (a) a data base, in the form of a collection of labeled directed graphs where knowledge can be stored (b) pattern directed information retrieval and pattern invoked function calls (c) primitive statements which enable the user to construct flexible searching algorithms. The language is an extension of SNOBOL in its design and implementation and uses SNOBOL's string pattern matching facilities for its own (graph) pattern matching.
