First PRRS virus infections were recorded in the swine dense regions of North-Western Germany by the end of 1990. From there the virus rapidly spread to the whole of Germany and neighbouring countries. In the new federal states of Eastern Germany less outbreaks were recorded than in the West and the clinical signs appeared to be less severe. Nevertheless economic losses in PRRS-positive farms were significant and required prophylactic measures to control the virus,
