FEED ADDITIVES TO PIGLETS, PROBIOTIC OR ANTIBIOTIC

Due to economical reasons, weaning age of piglets has decreased from ten to twelve weeks (40-50 years ago) till 2 to 5 weeks. This force the piglets into a stress situation, which is claimed to induce variation of the intestinal flora, 1-3 weeks postweaning (10, 11). This stress, together with environmental and dietary changes are claimed to induce several intestinal diseases, and reduced weight gain (4). To improve the intestinal flora of piglets, both the antibiotic Zn-bacitracin (Albac~(R)) and the probiotic Bacillus licheniformis have been tested, and both have been claimed to be effective against some weaning diseases and/or beneficial as growth promoters (5, 12,6).
