DELAYED NEUROPATHY IN A SOW HERD INDUCED BY ORGANOPHOSPHORUS POISONING

Organophosphorus (OP) poisoning in pigs may appear as acute intoxication by direct or indirect inhibition of acetylckolinesterase. Clinical signs as hypersalivation, miosis, bradycardia, dyspnea, incoordination, convulsions and death through hypoxia are caused by accumulation of acetylcholine and following parasympathetic overstimulation. In newborn piglets congenital ataxia and tremor are well known as a result of treatment of pregnant sows with the OP antiparasitic trichlorphon (metrifonate). Postmortem findings include a marked hypoplasia of the cerebellum in affected piglets. A delayed paralytic syndrome, however, can be produced by organophosphate compounds in animals like sheep, cattle and poultry as well as in pigs. This paper reports a case of delayed neuropathy in sows, which was associated with a contamination of the feed by the pesticide isofenphos.
