A SURVEY OF VETERINARY STUDENTS ON ETHICS, WELFARE, AND FOOD SAFETY ISSUES IN ANIMAL AGRICULTURE: II. SPECIES AND CAREER INTERESTS

Species interest among veterinary students: All students were asked to rank their interest 1-4 (1 = Strong interest; 2 = Moderate interest; 3 = Only little interest; 4 = No interest at all) for each one of the following species: Dog, cat, exotic/bird,horse, cattle, swine, sheep/goat, poultry, lab animal, wildlife. Thus, several species could receive the same ranking by one student. Tables 1 and 2 summarizes by country the distribution (%) of students with strong (1) and moderate (2) interest in different species. USA was represented by the 6 US schools with 488 students, and by the AASP with 59 student chapter members. EU, with the 5 European schools totalled 467 students., Canada 60, Mexico 60, Japan 90, Taiwan 50, Thailand 85, and Australia 73 students.
