Pseudorabies caused by an alpha herpesvirus is a major economic loss of swine industry. Vaccination was the only way to protect swine herds from the disease in past years, but the disease is still a problem in many parts of the world as the virus andconventional live vaccine virus all can cause persistent infection. Since eradication program was launched in many countries using gene deleted marker vaccine and monoclonal antibody based differential detection, the disease is effectively controlled andapproached to eradication in some countries. Therefore, gene deleted vaccine plus a differential detection is considered to be the most effective way for eradicating pseudorabies. A gE gene deleted vaccine has been used in China for several years. In the study, we developed a recombinant gE-ELISA for further initiating eradication program of pseudorabies in China.
