The 20th century has been called the greatest century of industrial progress in the history of civilization. In the United States, the first synthetic soda ash plant built in Syracuse, NY, in 1884 and the first chlorine plant in Rumford, ME, in 1892. These provided the foundation for the domestic chlor-alkali industry of the next century. During the last 100 years, the world chemical industry expanded rapidly to provide a multitude of new products for thousands of uses. The world soda ash industry was emerging as an important component of the family of chlor-alkali chemicals.
