The Legal Consultancy Game is the game of giving legal advice professionally. It aims to be a description in general terms of the predictable patterns in an advice transaction between a consultant and a client. It is also a description of what the client demands of good legal advice. There are good reasons to describe consultancy as a game-like activity. Firstly, it shows how legal consultancy relates to legal argumentation. Secondly, it is attractive for very practical reasons to describe legal consultancy as a game that can be played by a computer. It provides us with a prescriptive theory of what legal information retrieval (IR) systems are trying to achieve through various technologies.
