The aim of this work is the study of the effects of viscoelasticity of polymers. Attention was focused on the shear yielding mechanism in an amorphous glassy polymer. The determination of a yield criterion, which takes into account the effect of mechanical history, was set as the final goal of this research. Experiments were carried out on a styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer, SAN. Simple loading histories in uniaxial compression conditions were examined. For each test yield onset was determined and several possible yield criteria were examined.
