The development and testing of the subway environment simulation version 2000

Since the initial development of the Subway Environment Simulation (SES) computer program in 1970s, the model has been used in the analysis of more than 40 underground transit systems as well as six mainline rail tunnels on five continents. The program well withstood the test of time. To meet the evolving needs of the industry, and to address certain limitations of the programs currently available in the public domain, a proprietary version of SES, SES 2000, was developed to include a number of technical improvements to the model. This paper discusses a number of new features and technical improvements of SES 2000. It presents the steps taken to ensure compatibility with previous SES versions, and how consistency of results was maintained between SI and IP versions. Finally, the program's ability to grow and incorporate future technological advances in tunnel ventilation design is presented.
