The demands placed upon an underground transit ventilation control system and the control system architecture are quantified in terms of the required performance and the number of possible system-wide fan and damper plant states. The use of logic tables in control system architecture is not new, but the application of Operating Mode Tables for tunnel ventilation control has resulted in useful simplifications for control system designs. The benefits of mode table operation in meeting these demands are discussed in generic terms, and specific examples of simple, moderate and complex arrangements are given from the ventilation system control solutions used for operating or soon-to-be operating transit systems. Definitions of specific terms applicable to Operating Mode Tables and their use in station and tunnel ventilation are included.
